3 Floyds Bloodforge Bourbon Review

We decided to sample a 3 Floyds release. You are probably thinking Zombie Dust Pale Ale, nope, and not Gumball Head, their wheat ale, either. No, today it is their Bloodforge Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. If you are a bit surprised to find that this famed Indiana brewery is also a distiller, so were we. In fact, one of us just stumbled onto it at a Costco of all places. Seems like they have been distilling for a while, but the beer still grabs all the headlines. From their website, “Crafted to honor those who boldly defy destiny”, and “our first bourbon is for those nights when bonds are forged, and legends are born.” Besides the age statement and mash bill, that is about all they say about it.

3 Floyds Bloodforge Bourbon sells for around $45, is 102 proof, aged for 4 years, and comes in a standard-looking corked bottle with a pretty cool label. The mash bill is 66% corn, 30% rye, and 4% malted barley. We do not know how available it is outside of Indianapolis. Hell, for that matter, outside of Costco.

We are big fans of 3 Floyds beers, but have no idea what to expect from this Bourbon. Hopefully, we will be pleasantly surprised. One thing, the mash bill is a little unique, we have been doing this post for years, and not sure if we have seen one quite like it. It almost comes off as high corn and high rye. If you want, you could make a 3 Floyds Boilermaker. Just remember, it is a shot of the Bourbon with a beer chaser; you don’t mix the two.

NOSE

A mild grain-forward nose of oak, vanilla, brown sugar, and caramel. Secondary aromas include rye, honey, citrus, and spice. Ice brings out some sweetness and more grain.

TASTE

Can definitely taste the rye along with the caramel, brown sugar, and leather. Getting beyond that, we get a little cocoa and grain. Also getting a mild spice, maybe cardamon. Ice again brings more grain and sweetness.

FINISH

Medium long, grainy with a touch of spice.

OVERALL

We all like it and would all drink this again.

Nose 3.5 out of 5

Taste 6.75 out of 10

Finish 3.5 out of 5

Total score 13.5 out of 20 barrels.

While not a major find or an overly complex juice, it does have its place. First, this Bourbon has a somewhat unique taste and aroma. Second, most of your friends have probably never had it, even though they may recognize the 3 Floyds name, so kind of a talking point. Third, the price point won’t hurt the wallet.

All three of us would, at that price, buy a bottle for our home bar. If you can find 3 Floyds Bloodforge Bourbon for around the $45 range, we recommend grabbing yourself a bottle. Maybe grab their beer as well and make you that Boilermaker.
